Olympus E-3 Body Only Digital Camera - A Competitive Camera

by Zarko Zivkovic

For the users who have used the original Olympus E-1 camera the Olympus E-3 comes as a worthy successor. Though it has been four years for this release to come it does not look out of place in the mid range DSLR market nor feel out of touch after such a long gap.

The build of the camera is of a magnesium alloy and it comes as dust proof, weather proof and splash proof. This makes it a suitable camera if you plan to shoot in extreme conditions. The body contains the usual number of buttons with the standard front and back dials, the status LCD and the direct access controls. The layout is mostly logical though the need for combination pressing of dials and switches feel a little old fashioned.

The Viewfinder is an excellent feature in the Olympus E-3. It offers 100 percent view and a magnification factor 1.1x. When you move through the different direct access options they appear in the viewfinder which is a very nice touch. The Viewfinder is comes with the 4:3 aspect ratio and with a big and comfortable eye cup which offers the view of a much more expensive full frame camera. However above ISO 2000 it keeps blinking and it becomes tiresome after a point.

The Olympus was the pioneer of the Live View mode and it comes as no surprise that they come out as tops in this area. Like most of its competitors it still needs a flip-up mirror for shooting in Live View mode. However it also comes with a flip and twist LCD that offers you some great angles for shots. It is also possible to shoot shots with the camera above your head. The Live View is a bit slow when you shoot through the LCD but it cannot be helped. The time factor is not helped by the reminder flashing that reminds you to switch on the Viewfinder cover. The built-in cover is something all DSLRs should have but it hogs valuable time when you are in a hurry to shoot.

The E-3 uses a Four Thirds MOS 10 megapixel sensor while is easily the best in the Four Thirds segment is faced with tougher competition in the normal price range peers. The LCD is also rather smallish and it is not quite as precise when focusing using the Live View mode. The camera is not suited for shooting dynamic sports or at low lights with ISO greater than 2000 as the noise becomes too much and it simply loses out to the competition. It is also a camera that comes with a steep learning curve though it works well in the hands of the experienced user.
