God of War 3 Review - Kratos Last Stand Against the Gods of Olympus

by Joe Lemmington

If you have played the first two installments on your Sony Playstation console, you will definitely breeze through God of War 3 since you are definitely already familiar with how the game is played and what the story is about. In truth, not much has really changed in the game except for the fact that it is the continuation of the story of Kratos. With regards to the level of action, it is still a wow factor for many players as it is filled with excessive amounts of gore and bloodshed. Surely those who love each installment of the God of War series won't find this a bad thing; in fact, they actually consider this the icing of the cake.

To give a brief overview, you play Kratos, the former servant of the previous God of War Aries, and the champion of the gods. Having gone through countless misfortunes, adventures, and obstacles of all sorts you have finally reached godhood and are now continuing on your quest for revenge.

Revenge is the theme to which the basis of the God of War series is founded on as Kratos aims to bring torture and death to those who have wronged him in the past. And the fact that the Olympian gods themselves are the ones who have wronged him doesn't strike fear or intimidation in him at all. Having almost killed Zeus in the previous installment, God of War 3 is the chapter in which you must "finish what you have started". This time though, you have allies to back you up. The Titans, which you have previously defeated, will move forward into the future to assist you in your final act of revenge.

This is the point where the story of God of War 3 begins. It starts with you riding on the back of Gaia the Titan, who previously guided you in the second installment of the God of War series. From there, you must make your way up to Mount Olympus where the last remaining Olympian gods such as Hades and Poseidon await your arrival. In the end, Kratos' goal remains: seek the destruction of Zeus.

Going now to the nitty-gritty details of the game, fans of the series will be delighted to know that the overall game play in God of War 3 has improved with more weapons and magical abilities, a heightened level of difficulty, and a story that is well constructed and compelling. Though not many players really connect with the story, you will feel the urge to root for the anti-hero as he battles one god after another on his way to Zeus.

Overall, the God of War 3 is expected to go down in gaming history as one of the best action and fantasy games ever created. Though there are critics who say that the third installment is nothing out of the ordinary except for new combos, weapons, and a continuation of the story, these elements are what made the series a hit in the first place.
