What is the Best Book to Learn Nikon Capture NX With? by David Chin

In an attempt to extract the best possible image quality and detail from their photos, many Nikon photographers have opted to shoot in RAW format. Putting their Digital SLR cameras in RAW mode, NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) files are produced, instead of the default JPEG (JPG) format.

RAW files contain a great deal of information, and there are many software programs on the market that are available to decode this information and convert it into JPG, PNG and such. Some of these programs are free, although most of the better ones aren't. Adobe Photoshop and Nikon Capture NX fall into the non-free category.

Nikon Capture NX is sold by Nikon, and unfortunately, isn't bundled together with the digital SLR camera that you purchase.

Skipping past the debates on whether Nikon should have included the software as a freebie in the first place, it is generally acknowledged that Nikon Capture NX is the best option for getting the most out of your NEF files.

However, it is not an easy software to master, and the next question is, naturally, what books are recommended for the NX learner?

The first spot to look for instruction is the tutorial that comes with NX itself. Admittedly, it is rather basic, and you probably want something meatier to allow you to expand on your creativity with the program.

Number 1 on the list is Jason P. Odell's 'The Photographer's Guide to Capture NX'. Undisputed is the fact that this booklways comes in at the top of recommendations in various digital photography forums. Jason has done an excellent job with this content-rich book that costs only $24.99 for the downloadable electronic version. Top marks are given to his writing style which presents information in a complete and easy-to-follow manner. He shares various tips such as sharpening techniques, how to reproduce the Velvia look and using Control Points to their fullest. Jason's also extremely responsive to e-mailed questions and takes active part in the forums.

Another book that is worth considering is Ben Long's 'Real World Nikon Capture NX'. At the moment of writing, it has not been released on Amazon.com yet. Keep a look-out for reader reviews on it once it starts shipping. The list price is $34.99, but Amazon.com lists it as $24.14 and is available for pre-order. You'd need to pay for shipping separately for this paperback.
