The Advantages Of Online Photo Sharing
by Andrew Regan
In the last decade, photography has become an increasingly digitised medium. But while many have revelled in the convenience and high-quality photography that digital cameras have granted, others have lamented the loss of traditional photographic printing - claiming that many digital cameras are not built to provide long-lasting photographic memories. While these complaints hold some ground, developments on the internet over the past few years have meant that there is now an easy way to maintain the longevity of your photos: online photo sharing.
The burgeoning popularity of online photo-sharing sites has seen the emergence of many successful internet brands in the new generation of web 2.0 sites. Photo sharing sites have flourished as more and more people - both professional and amateur photographers - continue to post their work and invite comments, links and general debate about their photos.
Uploading your photos and sharing them online has a range of benefits. For starters, if it's your child's first birthday party and you're keen to share the photos with family and friends across the world, you'll be able to do so - both simply and affordably - by placing them on an online photo album. Sharing your photos in this way avoids the expense of having to post photos to multiple recipients by mail, and is far more convenient than emailing large photo files that can take a while to download. What's more, using an online photo sharing site can also act as storage space for your photos, so you'll be able to keep them for an indefinite amount of time without cluttering up your computer's hard drive.
If you're a budding professional photographer, placing your photos on an online photo sharing site can be a great way to get yourself noticed by your peers. Many photo sharing websites let users add tags to their photos, so that other members of the photo sharing community will be able to easily find and view photos on similar subjects or from the same geographic location.
Tagging photos that you've uploaded to a photo sharing site means your photos will have much better visibility, and will also be likely to generate more user comments and constructive criticism of your work. Search engine Yahoo!, for instance, have recently started incorporating photos of famous world landmarks into their search results.
Online photo sharing, therefore, has a variety of merits that can be enjoyed by a cross-section of web users. Whether you're a developing photographer keen to share your work with the world, or you simply want to find an easy way for your grandmother to see photos of your new baby, online photo sharing is the answer for you!

Vienna trip song 1
Request: Please click the play button and pause button immediately and let the video buffer if you have a broadband connection in kbps. By the time you finish reading this introduction for the video, atleast half the video would have been buffered.
Description: The video has been composed of bits and pieces of videos taken during my austria official trip. I did not actually plan to take any videos and thus took only a digital cam with me. I realized that was a big mistake after visiting such a beautiful place.
I thought of taking photographs of places I visited as much as possible but something was creeping in my mind. I did not like the idea of simply standing in front of a museum or a glacier and smiling at my camera. That is not my way. I realized video was my way of sharing things. I made up my mind to use my digital camera to shoot videos. Well, that had its own set of problems. Video has to be widescreen for it to be appealing to the eyes but my cam can support only 4:3. I had no choice but to go on with 4:3 (letter boxing 4:3 is another time consuming task to make 16:9 and requires planning to avoid important parts of the frame on the top and bottom which is difficult). The problem with video is you definitely need a cameraman to shoot you with nice cam movements.
Being newbie to shooting, editing and all those stuff, I nearly wasted all my precious weekends, figuring out which song could suit my videos of visiting places, what shots to take, etc. I initially had a song in my mind (from "Polladhavan", a tamil film), shot some scenes without any plan of how finally it should be appearing, etc. I then chose another as I wanted a video of melodious music. But sadly that song was a duet (however I used a part of its track in title) which demands a lady partner to act with me! Great! I have none. It was almost only one weekend more for my departure from austria and I had only shot some unplanned videos (About 90% of the videos I have taken there are unplanned without even knowing for which song, theme it was being taken)
Then I happend to see a telugu movie called "Happy days", from which a song was quite interesting and soft as I expected. I could not wait any more. I stripped the song in about 80 pieces, for cut shots, and shot some at nights just two days before departure with the help of my colleague sudha, in order to at least have a theme instead of random shots here and there.
The theme I thought was simple. Just going out of my hotel, roaming around and coming back. Time was so tight that I had to shoot most at nights to make up something.
Many videos that I thought would be wonderful came out crappy due to my camera shakes and self shooting because of which I could not use them in the song. However, I picked some, stitched, edited, mixed some shots that I could use and here is the song. I have consumed almost all of my video shots in this and almost nothing left for a sequel!
I would like to thank my colleagues sudha shalini and sankar here. Though they were absolutely not interested in taking videos of this kind and wanted to take only photographs as everyone do, they handled my camera for some shots of mine as per my request. Whatever scene you see with me inside, and with cam movement, it was shot either by sudha or sankar.
To avoid bugging them too much, I took many cam-at-rest shots myself with the help of tri pod which was another funny story. The people used to stare at me, carrying tripod, and doing awkward movements in front of the camera! Many times, I simply stood without doing anything to overcome shyness as some people were staring at me wondering why was I jumping in front of a camera standing on 3 legs!
I decided not to use too much graphics for this song for two reasons. I was very tired of editing this song as it was very time consuming and also, I wanted it to be simple. Just a melody of my travel.
Thanks for watching my video. Do leave your comments.
